Reasoning with Consistent Probabilities

The objective of the present paper is twofold: first, to establish explicit conditions for the elicitation of consistent a priori and conditional probabilities for a set of events representing pieces of evidence and hypotheses. Furthermore, an algorithm is proposed which uses these consistent input probabilities to compute lower and upper bounds for higher order joint probabilities. Secondly, p...

Consistent assignment of quantum probabilities

We pose and solve a problem concerning consistent assignment of quantum probabilities to a set of bases associated with maximal projective measurements. We show that our solution is optimal. We also consider some consequences of the main theorem in the paper in conjunction with Gleason’s theorem. Some potential applications to state tomography and probabilistic quantum secret-sharing scheme are...

A consistent set of infinite-order probabilities

Some philosophers have claimed that it is meaningless or paradoxical to consider the probability of a probability. Others have however argued that second-order probabilities do not pose any particular problem. We side with the latter group. On condition that the relevant distinctions are taken into account, second-order probabilities can be shown to be perfectly consistent. May the same be said...

On the Credal Structure of Consistent Probabilities

In this paper we introduce a novel, simpler form of the polytope of inner Bayesian approximations of a belief function, or “consistent probabilities”. We prove that the set of vertices of this polytope is generated by all possible permutations of elements of the domain, mirroring a similar behavior of outer consonant approximations.

Consistent aggregation of simply scalable families of choice probabilities

We characterize probabilistic choice models that have two (or more) fixed ratio scales associated with each choice option. A version of Luce’s choice model with fixed scales and exponents, which we also characterize, is included. The characterizing properties are: Simple scalability, i.e. the choice probabilities depend upon a priori arbitrary combinations of the two scale values attached to ea...
